What is Orthodontics?

Orthodontics is one of the specialised fields of dentistry. It is concerned with the growth and development of the teeth and jaws and associated structures. Treatment involves resolution of the irregularities that can occur.

To produce a nice smile and correct bite requires a team effort. That is why your family dentist or school dentist and the orthodontist work as a team on your behalf to produce the best result.

Who Practices Orthodontics?

Orthodontists. These are dentists who undergo specialist University training (normally lasting 3 years) and hold a postgraduate qualification in Orthodontics.

To ensure you are being treated by someone who is fully qualified, ensure they are registered with the Dental Board of Queensland (or other Australian state) as a registered specialist Orthodontist.

How Braces Move Teeth

There are two essential ingredients needed to move teeth into proper alignment:

1. Steady gentle pressure.
2. Time.

To achieve this, the Orthodontist attaches braces which generally consists of metal or clear brackets and wires, to produce slight pressure on each tooth. Throughout treatment the Orthodontist will periodically make adjustments to maintain the directional pressure required to continue the movement of the teeth.

When Should I see and Orthodontist?

While Orthodontics can improve smiles at any age, there is usually a best age to begin treatment in order to achieve maximum improvement within the minimum amount of time and expense.

Ideally children should visit an orthodontist at about 9 years of age or even sooner if a problem is noticed early. An early examination allows the Orthodontist to plan treatment to give maximum improvement.

In some cases, early treatment may be initiated to prevent more serious problems from developing. This early intervention may often make treatment at a later stage shorter and less complicated.
